So, there has been yet another mass shooting in America. I
am not shocked at all about it. It is really the inevitable consequence of what
I call the culture of death that America has nurtured since its inception. Is
it really surprising that an imperialist country that built itself upon a
foundation of genocide and slavery has this problem? These problems are not
heavily discussed in the popular culture or even history classes. It just lurks
there in the American collective unconscious. It unknowingly drives Americans
as a people. Then there is the mantra of violence that Americans inculcate
themselves with in their popular media. So, much of our literature and theatre
reinforces the narrative that violence is right, violence is good and is the
solution to all of our problems as human beings. We have all seen the movies
where a man is somehow wronged and then solves his problems through extrajudicial
means, mass murdering his way to personal justice. When you build a country on
genocide and slavery and constantly tell the people that violence is good you
cannot be surprised that mass murder results.
